Functions
A function is an expression, rule, or law that defines a relationship between one variable
(the independent variable) and another variable (the dependent variable). In the equation
y=f(x), x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable.
The symbols f(x) (read as "f of x"), g(x), P(x), etc., are often used for
functions of the independent variable x; the choice of using the letters f, g or P is
arbitrary.
Functions involving more than two variables occur
frequently in applications of
mathematics.
